Our Department offers an MA/Ph.D. program and a Ph.D program in French. Our doctoral program seeks to advance students' understanding of the literature and culture of the French and Francophone worlds; to acquaint students with major developments in criticism, theory, aesthetics, and cultural studies; to emphasize and foster interdisciplinary approaches that stimulate critical thinking about interpretation, literary history, and historiography; and to prepare students for the challenges of diverse and changing job market. As part of their pedagogical training, our Teaching Assistants study second language acquisition and also practice interdisciplinary approaches to teaching French in the Humanities and General Education curricula. Through careful training and mentoring, they gain knowledge about how to deliver interactive, well-focused and effective instruction that fosters a stimulating learning environment.
We are active in the campus Consortium for Literature, Theory and Culture, which organizes colloquia, encourages interdisciplinary exchanges, and supports conference travels for graduate students.

The Institute is an immersion, intensive, three-year M.A. program. It is unique among universities in the United States in that it offers an MA degree earned during 3 summers. UCSB's Summer Institute aims particularly to meet the needs of elementary, high-school and junior-college teachers of French as well as other professionals unable to pursue graduate studies during a regular academic year.
