Application to our Graduate Program:

The deadline to apply in order to be considered for financial support for 2009-2010 is January 1, 2009.

Applicants need to fill out the graduate application, accessible online at the Graduate Division website, and then send the application electronically to the Graduate Division. The Department is then notified and can access your application information.

In addition, supplementary materials, including a statement of purpose (2 copies; form available at the Graduate Division website), 3 academic letters of recommendation (with completed coversheets, forms available at the Graduate Division website), official transcripts (2 copies) from all post-secondary institutions attended, a writing sample (a 10-20 page essay in French on a literary subject; an English essay may also be included) and a recording of spoken French (a 3-minute reading of a text of your choice; 3-5 minutes of spontaneous speaking about any subject that interests you) must be sent directly to the Department at the following address:

You may send electronic versions of your writing sample(s) and recording to our Graduate Program Assistant. Letters of recommendations may also be sent electronically by your referees, but original copies of the completed coversheets should be sent to the Department at the above address.

Please note that the Graduate Division must also receive your GRE General test scores (General Test: Math, Verbal, Analytical Writing). If you want to be considered for financial support (including University Fellowships), make sure that you take the test in time for the Department to receive your scores by the mandatory January 1 deadline. GRE scores take approximately 2 to 3 weeks from the test date to reach the University and the Department.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) are required for all non-native English speakers, except those with a degree from an Anglophone undergraduate institution.

There is no pre-application necessary.

Upcoming Deadlines:

  • For Fall 2009 admission, the deadline is January 1, 2009, in order to be considered for financial support
  • May 1, 2009 is the final deadline for Fall 2009 admission 
  • For Winter 2009 admission, the deadline is October 1, 2008
  • For Spring 2009 admission, the deadline is January 15, 2009
