"A Cognitivist Perspective

on Foreign Language Writing"

Tuesday, November 30 , 2004

3:00-4:30pm, Phelps 6309

One of the most prevalent myths regarding students' seemingly weak foreign language writing skills is that they simply haven't mastered the grammar presented in their language courses. Yet these same students perform perfectly well on grammar exercises and grammar tests. What is it about writing, then, that has such a dramatic impact on language skills? Int his presentation, we will explore some cognitive issues that influence foreign language writing, as well as some practical strategies for helping students develop their writing skills and simultaneously boslter the acquisition of the target language.
