In this course, we will read major works of the French Enlightenment, in particular the works by French philosopher and political scientist Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who shaped modern political history: the two Discourses, The Social Contract, and Emile.  We will also study Voltaire, Diderot, Laclos and other major figures of the century.

Readings, discussions and assignments in French.

This course satisfies satisfies 4 units of areas B2 or B3 or C of the new French major, 2004-present.
