Bienvenue en Français 5!

French 5 is the second quarter continuation of the Intermediate French Program sequence. The course, which is taught entirely in French, includes a review and refinement of French grammar, reading short stories and poems, a film, and presentations of French and Francophone cultural material. The French 5 classroom is very interactive and conversationally oriented, at the same time that there is a focus on improving reading and writing skills. Prerequisites: completion of French 4 or its equivalent.

Classroom conversation will focus on the differences between French, Francophone, and American culture and customs and will include:

  • The media and the press
  • Art and museums
  • Immigration
  • Working in France

Readings, which will also serve as catalysts for discussion include short stories and poems by Rimbaud, Éluard, Prévert, Duras, and Maupassant.

 

We will cover the following grammar points:

  • The subjunctive
  • Direct and indirect object pronouns,y , en, and disjointed pronouns
  • Idiomatic uses of the verb devoir
  • Indefinite adjectives and pronouns
  • The future and anterior future
  • The conditional

Course work includes regular workbook exercises and language lab, 3 quizzes, 3 short compositions, 1 midterm, and 1 final.
