FRENCH 4

Bienvenue en Français 4!

French 4 marks the first quarter of instruction in the second-year, Intermediate French Program sequence. The course, which is taught entirely in French, includes a review and refinement of French grammar, reading short stories, and presentations of French and Francophone cultural material. The French 4 classroom is very interactive and conversationally oriented, at the same time that there is a focus on improving reading and writing skills. Prerequisites: completion of a first-year college-level French course or its equivalent.

Classroom conversation will focus on the differences between French, Francophone, and American culture and customs and will include:

  • Personal Interests
  • Friends, Food, and Education
  • Family and Relationships
  • Vacations and Transportation

Readings, which will also serve as catalysts for discussion include short stories by Eugène Ionesco, Joseph Zobel, and Marcel Aymé.

We will cover the following grammar points:

  • Review of the present tense of regular and irregular verbs
  • Definite, indefinite, and partitive articles
  • Interrogative pronouns
  • C'est/ce sont versus Il est/elle est/ils sont/elles sont
  • Adjectives
  • Pronominal verbs
  • Possessive adjectives and pronouns
  • Past tenses: passé composé, imparfait, plus-que-parfait

Course work includes regular workbook exercises and language lab, 2 quizzes, 3 short compositions, 1 midterm, and 1 final.
