France multiethnique et francophonie"

Description:

Transitional course between lower-division language and upper-division literature/ advanced culture courses. Students develop their writing and speaking skills through the study of contemporary French and Francophone literature, art, and film.

French 26 is the prerequisite course to all upper-division courses taught in French.

Prerequisite: French 6 or equivalent proficiency or consent of instructor.

The course is taught entirely in French. All assignments, readings and discussions are in French.

This course also includes a review of grammar.

Themes and course materials:

This composition class includes modern and contemporary readings on France as a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society. Readings of Claire de Duras's Ourika; Leïla Sebbar's trilogy of Shérazade; Mariama Bâ's Une si Longue Lettre. The class also include visual materials, such as Orientalist paintings by Delacroix & Ingres, and films by Merzak Allouache and Mathieu Kassovitz.
