Summer Session: French 196X
Fantastic Tales, Fantasy, and the Detective Fiction
Taught in English; readings in English
Fantastic Literature is often associated with apparitions, vampires, and a vast array of morbid creatures. But, as we shall see in this course, the genre is concerned less with horror than we might suspect, and its heyday was of relatively short duration. Why is that? Lying somewhere between fantasy, detective fiction, and magical realism, the fantastic genre raises fascinating questions about the limits of knowledge and human experience, while interrogating the very foundations of belief and consciousness. In this class, we shall read a range of fantastic tales and stories related to this pan-European, Pan-American genre. Authors include Hoffmann, Balzac, Mérimée, Gautier, Hawthorne, Poe, Maupassant, Stevenson, Borges, and Queneau. We shall also read theorists of the fantastic, including Tzvetan Todorov and the contemporary French philosopher, Clément Rosset.
Come join us for a Summer of great reading and discussion!
