Over the course of the past century autobiographical writing has become ever more rich, diverse and innovative. We will read autobiographies by five major contemporary French writers, focusing on some key theoretical issues—such as autobiography and self-portrait, autobiography and fiction, the portrayal of childhood and family—and paying particular attention to the question of “autofiction” and women’s autobiography.
